Miles Beneath these Wheels

I had climbed out of the wreckage probably looking quite the worse for wear
when a broken roadside prophet hit me with this open knowing stare
he said son you look, about like I feel

I said it's just a few more miles beneath these wheels

well the wind blew off the harbor and we bunched our shoulders up against the cold
we were tired and we were hungry, and way to young to be feeling so old
Slim said cut, and I'll deal

we never talked about the miles beneath our wheels

and mister ghosts can't haunt you like a memory
it'll echo through your canyons, come crashing through your dreams
when love it gives, less than it steals

call it just a few more miles beneath these wheels

it was somewhere on the border that I found myself alone and in the rain
somewhere in the distance I could hear the lonesome sound of leaving trains
it floated out across the fields

so I racked a few more miles beneath these wheels
