George Jones' Ghost

the bright lights make long shadows
out where the truckers and the truck stop queens are making their connections
in a gravel lot back of the Hollywood
me and Maggie we were sitting up on Maggie's hood, talking about flying
while John the Baptist fumbled with the radio
says why don't anybody ever play George Jones no more'

well we're wrapping it up, we're laying it down
these worn out dreams in this worn out town
cause everything loose just seems to roll out to the coast
except for me and George Jones's ghost

everybody pointing fingers at the Christian man
but John the Baptist he's the salt of this land
he'd give you the shirt off of his back now
he and Maggie sir they got it right
I still like to swing by their place after work sometimes of Friday night
just sit and talk about flying

inside old John'll just be fumbling with the radio
and in the dying light Maggie looks like an angel
